Eveson Takes Us Through His Mix...
Eveson - Late Night Special (Dub)
Something exclusive to introduce the mix, only myself and LTJ Bukem have this one at the moment. Hypnotic pads make way for bluesy guitar riffs punctuated by upbeat funk stabs and a stepping break.
Calibre - Jackoff (Samurai)
The grand master of groove trades key licks for square waves in this irresistibly acidic bassline roller.
Eveson - Crying Version (Nu Directions)
Smooth soul vocals, horn stabs and dubwise vibes, strung together with trademark Eveson bleeps and a heavyweight bass groove.
Brother - Say It Loud (Fokuz)
Pure feel-good liquid vibes laid over a sinuous funk loop. Brother is quickly becoming a master of the sampled soul sound.
Alix Perez - Stray (Shogun Audio)
Effortless and minimal ethereal funk, Alix rolls out one of his most effective compositions to date in true style.
Eveson - Tricks (Shogun LTD)
Taken from my recent 12" on Shogun Ltd and one of my most popular tunes to date, this is a stripped back stepper layering chopped R&B vox with intertwining bleeps and bass stabs.
Calibre - New Cons (Exit)
This one really surges out of the gates with distorted metallic soundscapes building the tension before unleashing a barrage of thundering subs.
Spectrasoul - Buried (31 Records)
This subtle and unassuming slice of science fiction really comes into its own on a massive system. The hypnotic pound of the bassline will absolutely destroy dancefloors when dropped at the right moment.
Flying Lotus - Tea Leaf Dancers (D&B Bootleg)
Wistful vocals laced over a throbbing low-end and skippy two-step break. Wicked bootleg action.
Commix - Justified (Metalheadz)
Minimal tech funk pieced together with military precision. Hopefully a taste of what's to come from Commix's next work in progress album.
Phobia & Jubei - Guillotine (Breakage remix) (Coded)
Breakage goes in deep with this remix for Phobia & Jubei's debut outing of their new label. Dub FX and sinister vocal stabs swim eerily amongst halfstep rhythms and spooky muffled textures.
Rufige Kru & D-Bridge - Mirror (Metalheadz)
I first remember hearing this tune at my first proper D&B night upon returning from the French Alps last spring. D-Bridge dropped this and I, along with the rest of the club went absolutely ballistic. Being my birthday, I was totally shit faced and this was the only tune I remembered that night… perfect drum & bass.
Adam F - Metropolis (Metalheadz)
No set is complete without at least one classic, this being my weapon of choice for the past few months. Easily one of the most devastating basslines ever created.
Brother - Junction (Eveson Remix) (Influence)
A remix for Aaron Jay's young Influence label. I flipped the script with this remix transforming the light-hearted upbeat funk of the original into a moody jungle roll-out complete with snarling bass riffs. I've always wanted to break out some epic string sections in a tune and finally it seemed right to do so, the breakdown is my favourite part!
Soul Intent - Conflict (Redseal)
I've played a Soul Intent tune in pretty much every set I've performed this year. When I want to drop something on a heavier tip this stuff just hits all the right spots. Restrained violence bound to a wicked groove.
Hobzee & Zyon Base - Red Letter (Survival Remix) (Diverse Products)
This is what happens when you merge Hobzee & Zyon Base's drifting ambience with the signature rolling tech funk of Survival. Wicked tune.
Chris Inperspective - Heather's Hot Waffles (Exit)
Another one of those tunes that's 'nice and ambient' on a small system but play this on a big rig and the subs just completely envelope the dance... When the 'woffles' (as D-Bridge calls them!) come in, it's all over...
Saburuko - Warped (Instra:mental Remix) (Horizons)
Futuristic Bladerunner-esque vibes from forward thinking duo Instra:mental as they rework another forward-thinking duo's retrospective classic.
Loxy & Isotone - Shodan (Cylon)
Heavyweight kung-fu action from Jedi master Loxy and young apprentice Isotone. Loxy's been making exceptional music for a long time and his recent stuff is no exception, I could only choose to include this above the rest as it seems to 'belong' so innately in the mix with Warped!
Hobzee & Zyon Base - 1000 Paper Cranes (Samurai)
More kung-fu action, this time from Hobzee & Zyon Base. Where Shodan is more Fist Of The North Star, this would be more Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon... Ethnic ambiance and whispering vocals wrap themselves around a percussive breakbeat and deep subs.
Saburuko & Brother - In Control (Horizons)
A staggeringly beautiful collaboration where you can hear both parties bringing their respective talents to the fore. Perfect in every way.
Eveson - Lucid (Channel 82)
This will be the second release on my own art / music fusion imprint Channel 82 fusing soul and jungle vibes in a melancholy yet uplifting roll-out...
Eveson - Bluebird (Channel 82)
...Backed with this A-side, Bluebird, a personal favourite inspired by those perfect days shredding pow under clear blue skies at the top of a mountain... also a favourite with Fabio, Grooverider, Shy FX and Bukem...
Lomax - Federation (Critical)
An older one from Lomax but still one of my favourites. This with Bluebird has been a regular mix of mine for a good while now, perfect for when you want to take the crowd by surprise with something they least expect. This tune's even more of a heavyweight when you catch 'em off guard.
Theory - Pictures, Shapes & Patterns (Channel 82)
Another rule I always try to apply is no set is complete without at least one proper Amen rinse-out, and they don't come much better than this. I fell in love with this tune so much that when I found out it was unsigned I had to do something with it! Forthcoming on Channel 82, I've already got a dubstep remix from Komonazmuk, while Lomax will be bringing a more modern dancefloor edge and I'm gonna go in on a deep, experimental tip... Watch this space!
t:solo - Speakeasy (Redseal)
Sexy as fuck 'jazz jungle' forthcoming on Presha's Samurai offshoot, Redseal. The flip is just as great and ventures into more atmospheric territory. If you like your d&b rich and musical, t:solo is definitely one to watch.
Eveson - Body & Soul (Channel 82)
A small slice of downtempo jungle soul, wrapped around a chopped 140 BPM Soulpride break. A nice way to finish off the mix, and a brief insight into an area I plan to further explore in the future...
