T.U.R.F. is the musical project of childhood friends Lorenzo and Tom. They first met at a rave in 2003, where they found out they not only shared the same taste in music, but that they were also actively producing music themselves. However, in the years to follow a potential collaboration didn't even cross their minds. Tom began to focus more on playing live instruments, whereas Lorenzo dove into the depths of electronic music and released records under his alias Kurizu. In 2017 they finally decided to join forces to start a new project: T.U.R.F. Under this moniker they express their longtime love of house music in many shapes and forms, ranging from the grooving house from Chicago, to the deep vibes from Detroit, to the filtered disco sounds from Paris. Kid Fonque has become a vital part of South African electronic music and club culture over the last 20 years. Uniquely accomplished in both influence and scope, he is an over-achiever in every one of his roles; DJ, Producer Label Owner, Promoter and more recently, Radio Host. Firmly established as a tastemaker in South Africa, Kid Fonque’s influence can be felt and heard in the music of the many artists he has helped nurture with his role as label manager of Africa’s seminal dance label Soul Candi Records and now his new label Stay True Sounds. Kid Fonque’s talent is the type that refuses to acknowledge boundaries of any kind – be they genres or borders. The respect he is paid by the industry is a result of his no compromise attitude to playing and making music. Rather than following trends, Kid Fonque has always done things his own way. Importantly, every record he reaches for bares all the hallmarks of the Kid Fonque sound – a golden thread that ties all his sets together somehow. Like a painter dabbing his brush into different hues, Fonque’s palette embraces everything from Bass and Broken Beats to Bossa Nova, Hip Hop and every shade of House – and with this open-minded approach, he’s been deconstructing dance floors at home and abroad for well over a decade. Over the last couple of years he’s played dates in Hong Kong, Dubai, the UK and Switzerland. To kick start the Selected Timbre mix series, I've pulled together some of my favorite tunes that portray some of my favorite Timbres. For those who don't know, the Timbre is the characteristic quality of a sound, independent of pitch and loudness, from which its source or manner of production can be inferred. Timbre is what gives a flute, its 'flute-ness', or what helps us distinguish a Viola, from a Tuba. When deciding on the overall structure of the mix series, I wanted to make sure that the selections being played were special. The music selected here isn't throwaway, or easily forgotten. Music that will hold through the test of time. St Germain is among the leading French masters to have established the 'French Touch': the 'French Traxx EP' and 'Motherland EP', both released in 1993, introduced his style: a mix of deep house, jazz and lounge; sampling and real instruments playing side to side. Navarre's album Boulevard was released in July 1995 and has sold over one million copies[4] worldwide. His United States debut, Tourist, was released in 2000 and sold 300,000 copies in the USA and four million copies worldwide.[4] Bob Marley, Toots & the Maytals, Miles Davis and Kool and the Gang are among Ludovic's early influences. He composed his first work under the name of Sub System with friend Guy Rabiller. He has released EPs under a number of aliases, among them Deepside, LN'S, Modus Vivendi, Nuages and Soofle. St Germain is not associated with the Saint-Germain-des-Prés Café compilation series, though his song "Deep in It" is featured on its "Volume 1". His song "Rose Rouge" was featured in the official movie trailer for Joss Whedon's 2013 Much Ado About Nothing. His eponymous album, released on 9 October 2015, was recorded with the participation of African musicians, the album features traditional Malian instruments such as kora, balafon and n’goni, that mingle with electric guitars, pianos, saxophones and electronic loops. The first single, “Real Blues”, sets the voice of Lightnin’ Hopkins to the beat of wild, fiery drums and percussion. The original single sleeve is decorated with a 3D mask conceived by Urban Art creator Gregos, known for his smiling and frowning faces stuck on walls throughout Paris and Europe. My tribute to the one and only Marcus Intalex. As with many people, he was hugely influential in my love of drum and bass, being one of the artists that inspired me to buy the music and put different mixes together over many years. I loved going out to hear him DJ and he would always bring something different to anyone else who might be playing on the same night. He was always pushing the drum and bass scene forward. This mix features my favourite tracks of his. There are many more tunes that have been just as impactful but these are the ones that were special for me. As for the picture, this was taken in Nottingham, UK. A great personal memory and one that I wanted to attach to this mix as a celebration of the good times I've had listening to his music.
